Hoggard reminds selectors
Yorkshire v Hampshire (LV County Championship) : Day Four
MATTHEW HOGGARD was delighted
with Yorkshire's display
as they wrapped up victory in a
little over three hours at Headingley
on Saturday, getting their
season off to the perfect start by
destroying Hampshire by an innings
and 27 runs.
It was a near complete performance
from the home side as
they knocked off the four wickets
required with consummate
ease. Hoggard rounding off a
magnificent eight wicket display
with the final blow as he ripped
out Shane Bond's middle stump
to bring an emphatic end to proceedings.
Despite his heroics, the
bowler was keen to attribute
much of the praise to his team
mates.
"It's nice to get a few wickets,"
he said. "The boys bowled fantastically,
any one of us could
have picked up three or four but
it was a massive team effort and
in the end I got the rewards for
the work of everyone else."
Hoggard's display is sure to
have alerted the England selectors
and the seamer knows he
needs more performances like
this one if he's to force his way
back into the international fold.
"Hopefully I can maintain
what I've been doing" he said.
"I need to put some pressure on
the selectors to get back in the
England side.
"It's a good start but the win
is the most important thing, to
getting Yorkshire off and running.
We missed out on four
bonus points by two runs in the
first innings which we were all
disappointed about, but other
than that we played really well."
Yorkshire were in full control
from day one with Andrew Gale
doing the lion's share of the
damage with his excellent 138 -
Hampshire could only make 21
more runs in their entire first innings
than Gale did in his solo
knock.
Other than the unpredictable
West Yorkshire weather, only
the impressive stand of 74 between
Nic Pothas and Michael
Brown looked like causing the
home side any worries as they
took to the field on Saturday
morning.
When Pothas was bowled by
Deon Kruis after only 22 runs
had been added to Hampshire's
overnight score of 136 four, the end looked in sight.
