McGrath’s bowling skills key to Tykes win

9:22am Monday 28th April 2008

Yorkshire v Derbyshire (Friends Provident Trophy)

DARREN Gough returned from injury but it was Anthony McGrath and the rest of Yorkshire's bowling attack who did the damage with the ball at Headingley, as Yorkshire Carnegie skittled a lacklustre Derbyshire Phantoms side to record their first win in this season's Friends Provident Trophy.

McGrath was in particularly devastating form taking three wickets from his four overs for just 16 runs in a contest that became 24 overs a side after all the rain that had seemed to hold off during the County Championship win against Hampshire hammered down in the morning at Headingley.

"I've not got many runs so far this season so I thought I'd better put my hand up and get some wickets," said McGrath.

"We knew Lancashire had beaten Scotland so we really needed these two points to get ourselves off and running. The game turned out to be like a Twenty20 game and they're a dangerous side in that competition so we're delighted with the win."

After losing the toss and being forced to bat on a pitch that promised to favour the fielding side, the Carnegie lost opener Gerard Brophy for a duck early on, the wicketkeeper lasted just two balls before his edge was taken at second slip by Ricky Clarke Michael Vaughan was a somewhat surprising inclusion in the home side after his recent lack of form, but the England captain looked assured at the crease, all be it temporarily, before he tried to launch Tom Lungley over deep square whilst on 16, only to find Graham Wagg right underneath it with safe hands.

Andrew Gale was then controversially dismissed, caught by a full-length Clarke dive. Gale stood his ground but was given out after the umpires conversed although on reflection it seemed that the opener had stubbed the ball into the ground before it popped up to Clarke at short-leg.

An excellent unbeaten 41 from 49 balls from Adil Rashid dragged the home side back on track, the youngster demonstrating why he's now considered an all rounder.

He found it tough to find a partner with Jacques Rudolph, Tim Bresnan and Adam Lyth all dismissed, Pyrah was there at the end with Rashid, Carnegie making 119.

Ordinarily the Phantoms might have fancied themselves to knock off the required runs but against a bowling attack strong enough to leave Ajmal Shahzad out after his superb form of late, they never looked like winning.

Lythe set the tone from the very first ball, almost pulling of a spectacular catch at mid-wicket.

He got his fingertips to Chris Rogers' miss-timed shot, although he couldn't quite make stick what would have been a magnificent take.

Tim Bresnan struck twice early on and Derbyshire were rocking when Deon Kruis bowled Steve Stubbings for three, the visitors having made just ten runs.

After some respite, Richard Pyrah got in on the act with his first ball, trapping dangerman Ricky Clarke.

Bradford-born James Pipe will have wanted to impress and he top scored with 20 from 28 balls before he was brilliantly bowled by Pyrah. At 61 for 6 the Phantoms were in need of something special but McGrath's metronomic medium pace took the game out of sight.
