Tykes beats Lancs
YORKSHIRE kick-started 2008 in fine
style, beating Lancashire in Abu Dhabi
by 41 runs in the first Roses match
ever to be played outside the UK.
In their first outing in the pre-season
PRO-Arch Trophy, the White
Rose racked up 237 after winning
the toss and left-arm spinner David
Wainwright helped them to defend it,
sweeping up the tail with 3-31.
Anthony McGrath captained the
side with Darren Gough rested and
top scored for Yorkshire with 41.
Andrew Gale and Craig White got
Yorkshire off to a flyer, bashing 66 for
the first wicket before White becoming
the first of three victims for legspinner
Simon Marshall and Gale's
32 was ended by Andrew Flintoff.
Freddie' was the headline act and
was captaining his county in the absence
of the rested Stuart Law. But
as Gerard Brophy (36) and Anthony
McGrath (41) commanded the
crease, Lancashire were staring at a
victory target of around 300.
Instead, Yorkshire lost their last
five wickets for just 28 runs to be
skittled for 237 in the penultimate
over. But in the field they choked the
top of the Lancashire order and having
reduced them to 80/5, the game
was all but won.
Deon Kruis (2-37) and Ajmal
Shahzad (2-33) offered nothing to hit
in the early phase of the chase and
despite half-centuries from Flintoff
and Glen Chapple, Wainwright operated
with enough guile to finish off
the job by dismissing Chapple, Kyle
Hogg and Marshall to leave Lancashire
41 runs shy.
