Vettori short of practice
DANIEL Vettori fears his untimely
finger injury may leave
him short of bowling form for
the first Test against England at
Lord's.
The New Zealand captain confirmed
he will miss this week's
final warm-up match against
England Lions at the Rose Bowl,
after needing two stitches to
heal a cut in his spinning finger.
Vettori's tourists finished day
three of their match against
Essex at Chelmsford with their
hosts 45 for one in pursuit of 293
to win.
The slow left-armer, unable to
take any part with bat or ball
after a freak accident backing up
a loose throw on Saturday, was
grateful to tailender Kyle Mills
for an unbeaten 53 which helped
the Kiwis muster 195.
Obviously I'm disappointed
I'm not out there playing - and
I'm going to miss the second
warm-up game,'' he said.
But I'm confident of being
ready for the first Test match.''
Vettori, who rushed back from
his lucrative stint at the Indian
Premier League to be able to
lead his country here, reflected
on the unlikely circumstances of
his injury.
I just caught a ball which
Brendon (McCullum) threw at
the stumps,'' he recalled.
I backed it up and I took it
awkwardly and gashed across
the side of my left index finger.
It's something I've never really
seen in cricket before - all
the balls I've caught it's never
happened, and unfortunately it's
happened out there.
I've never seen it happen to
anyone else in cricket - and the
number of times guys catch
cricket balls, it's amazing.
But I'll just get on with it as
best as I can.''
Vettori is resigned to having
his finger in a protective plaster
and stitched for the next week,
leaving him with little time to
prepare for Lord's on May 15.
I was enjoying my bowling
stint out there, things were
going reasonably well,'' he
added. Coupled with three
more bats, it would have been
ideal preparation.''
