News & Reports
The South Northumberland victory bandwagon keeps on rolling
FEW teams can match the
power of Northern Rock ECB
North-East Premier League
champions South
Northumberland and for a
second week they dominated
the programme.
After an opening day victory
over Sunderland, last season's
runners-up, they blasted Norton
to win again by eight wickets
with the pace of Craig Smith (7-
12 in 12.2 overs) too hot to
handle. Norton didn't even pass
the hundred mark.
Stockton, last season's
bottom club, had a better day in
beating Blaydon by four
wickets with the arrival of
County all-rounder, Karl
Turner (46 and 5-34) making a
massive difference, but there
was no relief for struggling
Gateshead Fell who were
overwhelmed by Chester-le-
Street.
Quentin Hughes (66) showed
no mercy for the Fell bowlers as
his side reached 229-6 and
declared. The Fell mustered just
87 in reply.
Tynemouth, who share the
league leadership, and South
Shields were the day's other
winners - Tynemouth bowling
out Benwell Hill thanks to
Aussie Grant Lindsay (6-43) who
made a splendid 83 to set the
tone for the match. Shields had
another close finish beating
Newcastle by just 12 runs with
Phil Bell (73) and Paul Muchall
(5-29) in superb form.
Durham Academy fought out
a nail-biting drawn finish at
Sunderland where Ashley
Thorpe showed polish and style
with a superb century out of
271-6. The Academy finished on
233-9 with 89 for Andrew Smith.
The second round of matches
in the Warmseal Durham
Senior League wasn't expected
to turn up a major upset but
champions Burnmoor, who
went through the entire 2007
season without defeat, were
beaten at Horden.
Yet it didn't look likely when
former Durham County star,
Jimmy Daley, hit an undefeated
135 with four sixes and seven
fours, and allowed his captain to
declare on a potential match
winning score of 225 for 6. But
Horden's skipper, Adrian
Hedley (76) with fellow opener,
Michael Walker (64), featured in
a stand of 132 and grabbed
victory by five wickets with two
balls to spare of the 50th over. It
was only the second defeat for
the Moor in two years.
The day's other winners were
Hetton Lyons (by nine wickets
at Eppleton), Durham City (by
four wickets against Felling),
Whitburn (by six wickets
against Boldon) and South
Hetton (by seven wickets at
Seaham Harbour).
Paul Riddle (81 not out), Sean
Birbeck (78 not out) and
Andrew Lormor (4-28) enjoyed
life with the Lyons, whilst
getting wickets and runs
provided Brian Stones with
man-of-the-match status for
Durham City and Whitburn's
four-pronged attack, including
Tony Greaves (3-30) and Neil
Johnson (3-50), dealt blow after
blow to Boldon.
Esh Winning, champions of
the Readers Durham County
League, started as they left off
last year on the delayed opening
day to the new season. They
faced runners-up
Kimblesworth, but in an
enthralling match they got
home with 12 runs to spare.
Ironically it was former
Kimblesworth star Ryan
Moralee (43 and 4-28) who gave
his former team-mates a hard
time.
Evenwood, Willington,
Shildon and Hylton all started
with victories but it could be
another hard season for last
year's wooden-spoonists,
Langley Park, who went down
by nine wickets, the biggest
reverse of the day.
In the 3D Sports Durham
Coast League, there are few 100
per cent records after just two
games.
Ryhope lead Castle Eden by a
point after beating Bill Quay
with the Castle overpowering
Boldon CA who had won on the
opening day.
The Castle's first game was
drawn.
The Spellmans continued
their fine form with John junior
hitting 59 and his father making
41.
Shotley Bridge, Ryton and
champions Swalwell are the
early pacesetters in the
Wellstream Northumberland
and Tyneside Senior League.
Shotley lead by a single point
after defeating Annfield Plain
while Swalwell beat Leadgate
and Ryton got the better of
Benwell and Walbottle.
