Moralee switch heats up rivalry at the top

ESH Winning and Kimblesworth enjoyed a season long battle for top honour in 2007, with the destination of the title only being decided in the penultimate game of the campaign when Esh defeated their closest rivals to claim a second title in three years.

And the rivalry has continued as Ryan Moralee, who topped the bowling averages last time, has moved from Kimblesworth to the champions to form a potentially lethal partnership with Paul Chivers.

Esh are still uncertain about their overseas pro and will start tomorrow without him.

Over at East Parade, Aussie Aaron Andritch is back and Graham Carr, an opening bat, has joined from Annfield Plain.

Crook Town have strengthened and are confident they will improve on their mid-table finish last year.

Whilst Zaheer Shahbaz and Arif Aziz have moved to Marton in the NYSD League, Chris Hurst has arrived from Durham City, Jamie Robinson from Brandon and explosive hitter Omar Shahid from Middlesbrough. They are joined by Arsalan Mir, an allrounder from Lahore with a decent first-class record from his 37 matches.

Ankur Kakkar is another fresh face to the DCL - the lefthanded Indian is a spinning all-rounder, again endowed with first-class stats that stand up to scrutiny. He joins last year's third-placed side Evenwood who have also signed Jon Kellett from Lands, and welcome back Neil Teesdale. Chris Peareth has moved on to Shildon, but skipper Chris Coatsworth will expect his side to be there or thereabouts.

Shildon Railway also appear to have recruited well having had to turn to a new professional after Wilkin Mota succumbed to an IPL contract.

Sri Lankan Hemantha Boteju is his replacement - 162 top level wickets, and two ODI appearances suggest he will be a handful. Also new to the club are Rob Nevison from Bishop Auckland and Chris Peareth.

The talismanic Sachin Rana is expected at Tudhoe again.

Wicketkeeper Ian Musgrave has joined from Brandon.

Ushaw Moor have signed Usman Arshad who plays for Faislabad. He can turn his hand to legbreaks. Opening bat John Southeran has returned, which will make up for the loss of Michael Thorpe to Washington.

Willington have looked to New Zealand for Sam Wells will bring all-round skills to the team - the young Kiwi bats left-handed and bowls right-arm medium.

Aussie Matt Lemm, a grade cricketer from Perth, brings all-round skills to Hylton.

Darren Walton skippers and has the loss of the league's leading wicket-taker last term to deal with, Chris Rushworth having joined Sunderland.

Relegation is now a new worry for clubs in the League with the N.E. pyramid beginning and for the batch of clubs who finished near the bottom in 2007 there has been little positive player movement. Brandon had a young Western Australian lined up but a bad injury sustained while playing an Aussie Rules match meant he was ruled out - a few enquiries are being made about a replacement. With Jamie Robinson leaving for Crook skipper Stephen Atkinson will place great store on the clubs strong youth policy.

Etherley don't have a pro and Stephen Crane has emigrated to Australia as Gary Purcell captains an unchanged Mainsforth who have popular West Indian Brian Yearwood spearheading their season.

An aborted attempt to sign an overseas player also means that wooden spoonists Langley Park are unchanged.

All fixtures scheduled for this weekend have been postponed and will now be played on Sunday, June 22.
