Joy and pain for Davies
THE joy of taking a career-best
seven for 33 was marred for
Durham's Mark Davies by seeing
his side slump to 114 all out at
Old Trafford yesterday.
That left Durham 29 behind
Lancashire and after the fall of
20 wickets on the first day
Davies said: "The pitch is not as
bad as the scores suggest.
"The odd ball bounced but it
was just one of those days when
the ball has found the edge, the
nicks have carried and some
good catches have been held."
The 27-year-old seamer's previous
best was the seven for 59
he took against Northamptonshire
at Trent Bridge last year
when on loan to Nottinghamshire.
Durham allowed him to go
there after he struggled to make
an impact following a late start
to the season while still building
up his strength.
"I'm delighted that my careerbest
is now for Durham," said
Davies. "It's very special to be
able to give something back to
the club after all the work they
have put in with me and the patience
they have shown.
"When I took three wickets in
an over just after lunch I
thought it must be my day. To get
someone like Andrew Flintoff
first ball was a massive relief,
but I think he was a bit annoyed
because he was bowling really
fast at the end when I went into
bat. It was quite scary."
Davies also paid tribute to
Steve Harmison, who charged in
for 18 overs for Durham but took
only one wicket.
"It's all about bowling in partnerships
and having Steve bowling
at 90mph at the other end really
helps," he said.
