Pollock signing confirmed
DURHAM confirmed yesterday
that one of the world's greatest
all-rounders of the last decade,
Shaun Pollock, will be joining
them for the domestic Twenty20
Cup, which has been extended to
ten matches this season.
They have moved swiftly to tie
up the deal after their interest in
the 34-year-old South African
was revealed in Saturday's
Northern Echo.
Pollock, a big friend of
Durham skipper Dale Benkenstein,
will also be hoping to repeat
his partnership with
Durham's other Twenty20 signing,
Albie Morkel.
In his final appearance for
South Africa - a Twenty20
match against the West Indies at
Johannesburg in January - Pollock
was joined at the crease by
Morkel with the score on 77 for
six in pursuit of 132.
They had 6.1 overs left and got
home with four balls to spare,
with Pollock on 36 off 25 balls
and Morkel on 28 off 16 balls.
Currently playing in the Indian
Premier League, which lasts
until June 1, Pollock will make
his Durham debut against Derbyshire
at Riverside on June 11.
The other home games are
against Nottinghamshire (June
18), Leicestershire (June 20),
Yorkshire (June 24) and Lancashire
(June 27).
Durham are determined to improve
their Twenty20 performances
as they have the worst
record of the first-class counties
with eight wins and 22 defeats in
the five years since the competition
was launched.
Last year, three of the eight
matches were washed out and
two others were reduced.
Pollock played in 108 Tests,
taking 421 wickets at 23.11 and
averaging 32.21 with the bat,
and also appeared in 303 one-day
internationals.
In his 12 Twenty20 internationals
he took 15 wickets at
20.60, but the more important
statistic in this form of cricket is
economy rate, which read 7.62.
After his three-week stint with
Durham, Pollock will be commentating
for TV on the England
v South Africa Test series
and one-day internationals, plus
the Twenty20 international at
Riverside on August 20.
Durham are selling Twenty20
season tickets at £40 for adults
and £20 for juniors. Two-match
passes are available at £20 (£10
juniors), while individual match
tickets will cost £15 (£6 juniors)
on the day. Tickets can be bought
online at www.durhamccc.co.uk
or by ringing 0844 499 4466.
