LUKE Wells continued to torment Durham as he added a century at Chester-le-Street to the 258 he scored against them at Hove in May.

Sussex's acting captain completed his century off 178 balls by leg glancing Chris Rushworth for his 13th four and was still there on 118 at tea out of 242 for three.

His desire to bat first was vindicated as he shrugged off the first ball exit of Harry Finch to put on 186 for the second wicket with Stiaan van Zyl.

While there were plenty of meaty strokes from Wells, both batsmen profited from edges. The South African was on 47 when he edged the first ball of a Graham Onions spell between gully and third slip for his seventh four and there were two more edges in the same over, the third just missing leg stump as it came off the inside of the bat.

Van Zyl fell for 92 when he sliced a drive off James Weighell to point, then Laurie Evans made 19 before edging the penultimate ball before tea from Keaton Jennings to be caught by Michael Richardson.
