Collingwood bids a seasonal farewell to Durham
PAUL Collingwood said goodbye
to Durham, possibly for the rest
of the season, yesterday before
going off for treatment arranged
by the England medical team,
writes TIM WELLOCK.
A stiff back and shoulder problem
prevented him from bowling
on Thursday and should England
require him to bowl in the first
Test, starting on Thursday, it is
uncertain he would be able to do
so.
The ECB confirmed he has had
an injection in a shoulder to try
and ease the injury.
With Liam Plunkett still at
least a month away from being
fit, Durham have added Callum
Thorp to their
squad for tomorrow's
Friends
Provident Trophy
tie against
Scotland in Edinburgh.
It was at The
Grange two years
ago that Thorp recorded
the best one-day figures since
Durham became a first-class
county, taking six for 17 at the
end of a week in which he also
starred in the championship
match at the Rose Bowl.
After being injured for
most of last season, he is
reported to have been
bowling well and
could play tomorrow
in place of
Mitch Claydon.
Neil McKenzie
will return
after missing
the Lancashire
game because
Durham had
given him permission
to attend
a wedding.
Garry Park stays in the squad,
and has pushed his claims as an
all-rounder after clean bowling
Stuart Law and Andrew Flintoff
at Old Trafford on Thursday.
Coach Geoff Cook said: "He
would be a more than useful occasional
bowler. His lack of
height counts against him, but he
bowled extremely straight. He
also batted bravely in the first innings
and he's a brilliant fielder."
The news from South Africa
yesterday was that Dale Benkenstein's
wife has produced a son
and the captain will be back in
time for Wednesday's championship
match at home to Yorkshire.
Meanwhile, Durham desperately
need to get back on track by
beating a Scotland side who won
their FPT tie at Old Trafford on
Monday to leave the group wide
open.
After tomorrow Durham's last
three group games are all at
home and if they win them all
they will have an outside chance
of qualifying for the quarter-finals.
