Durham stars on form
NEW signing Neil McKenzie
topped a great day for Durham
players around the world
yesterday when he shared an
unbroken stand of 405 on the
first day of South Africa's
second Test in Bangladesh.
While Steve Harmison took
five wickets against a New
Zealand Select Xl, there was
also a century for Michael Di
Venuto in his penultimate
match in Australia.
McKenzie finished the day on
169, with skipper Graeme
Smith on 223, and they need
only nine more runs to break
the Indian first-wicket record,
set by Vinoo Mankad and
Pankaj Roy against New
Zealand in Madras 52 years
ago.
Di Venuto made 144 for
Tasmania at Hobart on the first
day of their Pura Cup match
against New South Wales, who
are bidding for a place in the
final.
After winning the title last
season, Tasmania have won
only two of their nine games so
far but Di Venuto has scored
800 runs at an average of 53.33.
He will play his final match
for his state next week before
devoting the next two years to
Durham, playing under his
Italian passport.
Former Durham player
Jimmy Maher has announced
that, at 34, he is to retire from
first-class cricket after
Queensland's current match
against South Australia in
Adelaide. He needs 99 to reach
10,000 first-class runs for
Queensland, a figure surpassed
only by Martin Love, another
former Durham player.
Left-hander Maher made
three one-day centuries for
Durham in 2006, but struggled
in the championship and had a
disappointing season with
Glamorgan last summer.
