Durham split overseas slot three ways
DURHAM are to employ three different
players for the one overseas slot
they are allowed next season.
It is expected that Michael Di Venuto
will return to play for the full campaign
under his Italian passport, but
plans to bring back Shivnarine Chanderpaul
as the official overseas player
have had to be revised.
The West Indian's international
commitments will keep him at home
longer than expected, with a three-
Test series against Australia being followed
by five one-day internationals,
the last of which is on July 6.
Chanderpaul has continued last
summer's superb form with a century
in the first Test victory in South Africa
and has passed 50 in eight of his last
nine Test innings.
Durham coach Geoff Cook said:
"Shivnarine will join us as soon as he
can, but before that we plan to bring
in one player until June then a Twenty20
specialist.
"Twenty20 is gaining momentum
worldwide and we tried without much
success to improve our record last season.
But we have to be seen to be making
an even bigger effort this time.
"We are talking to one or two players.
The international calendar is so
fluid now it's impossible to pin some
people down. Dale Benkenstein has a
few ideas about who we could sign
from his experience in the Indian
Cricket League."
Batting at No 7 for the Delhi Jets, the
Durham captain had little opportunity
to shine with the bat in the ICL, although
he did take a few wickets.
Player of the Series was Australian
all-rounder Ian Harvey, while most of
the other star performers were other
ex-internationals such as Chris
Cairns, who hit seven sixes in one innings,
and Marvan Attapatu.
Durham expect to make an announcement
this month and are unlikely
to be influenced by the England
selections to be unveiled today.
While Phil Mustard is expected to
continue as first-choice wicketkeeper
in the one-day side for the tour of New
Zealand he may be overlooked for the
Test squad. Liam Plunkett and Graham
Onions are both in contention for
places in the England Lions squad
who are to compete in India's firstclass
domestic tournament.
