Vaughan tips Colly to be Test captain

MICHAEL Vaughan has identified Durham's Paul Collingwood as England's next Test captain.

Current incumbent Vaughan believes England's one-day captain has all the right credentials to slip seamlessly into the same role in five-day cricket, as and when required.

Vaughan, due to fly out to Colombo this week with a 15-man squad for a three-Test tour of Sri Lanka, is setting no specific timescale on the end of his own tenure or Collingwood's elevation.

But the 33-year-old is in no doubt his friend is the right man for the job when the situation becomes vacant.

I said at the time when I handed on the one-day captaincy, if Colly comes in and does a great job there might be a stage when he does both,'' said Vaughan.

I'm sure that stage will come.

Whether it's in a month, a year, two years, who knows?'' Collingwood, 18 months younger than Vaughan, took over the limitedovers reins after England's disappointing World Cup campaign this year, and has overseen the team in three series, plus the inaugural World Twenty20.

He followed defeat against the West Indies with victories against India and, most recently, in Sri Lanka last month.

Vaughan has seen enough to be confident Collingwood has the stature to take charge of the Test team.

I really believe he is going to make a good captain,'' he added.

He can switch to Test captain. If you can do one you can do both.

If in four or six weeks someone says the captaincy of the team should go to Colly, that it is in the best interests of the team that we have one and Colly leads both sides then that's OK with me.

That's the way it is going to go eventually.

It's the best job in the world, and I love every single minute of it. I hope I can take us on and on.

"But these things come to an end, and it's not something I worry about.

That's life.''
