JACK BURNHAM hit his second century of the week and there was also a ton for Michael Richardson as Durham racked up 404 for five declared against Durham University at Emirates Riverside yesterday.

Following his hundred in the two-day friendly against Middlesex, 20-year-old Burnham achieved the very rare feat of clearing the pavilion with one of his three sixes in an innings of 150.

He was stumped straight afterwards and Richardson also surrendered immediately after driving Darrel Williams for his third six, chopping the leg spinner into his stumps to fall for 116.

In what might be construed as another sign of Durham's demotion, the match has not been granted first-class status as the university have already played the two first-class fixtures they are allocated each season under the Centres of Excellence scheme.

In their opening draw at Bristol, four of the six wickets they took went to seamer Alex McGrath, a rarity among Durham University players in that he's a local lad from Bishop Auckland.

Yesterday he had Keaton Jennings lbw for six with a full-length ball and the other opener, newcomer Cameron Steel, made 28 before miscuing a hook to mid-on in seamer Joe Cooke's first over.

“The fact that it's not first-class doesn't matter to us,” said Durham coach Jon Lewis. “It doesn't change our objectives. We want to win and to get the right number of overs into the bowlers and for the batsmen to spend time in the middle. That's always better than nets.”

There was a second wicket for McGrath when he had Graham Clark lbw for 55 just before the declaration.

Durham left out Chris Rushworth, whose fitness is not in doubt following a winter in the gym after being denied entry to Australia.

As in the previous winter, he had arranged to play and coach with Brighton CC, but less than 24 hours after arriving at Tullamarine Airport he was sent home following a change in the visa policy.

The same thing happened to two Worcestershire players and the Professional Cricketers' Association are investigating as they had not been informed of the new rules.
