England paceman Mark Wood is out of the Test series in India.

The 26-year-old is facing a third operation on his problematic left ankle in the space of a year after he fractured a bone while bowling in Durham's Specsavers County Championship game against Surrey last month.

The injury has also forced him out of the ongoing Bangladesh tour and now means he will not feature in the five Tests against India, the first of which begins next month. He is also likely to miss the one-day series that follows in the new year.

Wood had only made his comeback in the second half of the 2016 domestic season, starring for Durham and then impressing for England in four ODIs against Pakistan.

While the issue is a blow to Wood in the short term, England's national physiotherapy lead Ben Langley thinks it may be a blessing in disguise as the new injury is unrelated to the problems which required two operations last winter.

Langley said: "Woody showed his commitment to Durham with the way he bowled 35 overs in that Surrey game, and we know now that he also showed a hell of a lot of courage and resilience.

"His foot and ankle swelled up hugely during the game, which was obviously worrying, and then we were perplexed when nothing significant showed up on the first scan.

"It was only when we got him in for a second scan that we discovered he'd been playing on despite having fractured a bone.

"So it's a different injury to what he's had the previous surgery for, and there's no reason to think that when he's had this bone fragment removed, he won't be able to get back to bowling as well he has for Durham, England Lions and England in the second half of the 2016 summer."

Wood will be eyeing a return in the one-day series against the West Indies next March.
