ENGLAND established a commanding lead after declining to enforce the follow-on on day three of the first Test against Bangladesh, but the hosts had plenty to cheer with five wickets in the evening session.
Graeme Swann completed his five-wicket haul after Mushfiqur Rahim (79) dragged the Tigers to 296 all out but Alastair Cook opted to bat again and saw his side slip to 131 for five.
That still represents a lead of 434 but for the first time in the match, Shakib Al Hasan’s side dominated a session.
The tourists started the day perfectly, with Tamim Iqbal adding just five to his overnight 81 before losing his off-stump to a beauty from Tim Bresnan.
That was enough to give him the highest Bangladeshi score against England, beating Aftab Ahmed’s mark of 82.
Night-watchman Shahadat Hossain was erroneously given out by umpire Rod Tucker before the decision was quickly overturned, though he did not take advantage.
Instead he nicked to slip to give debutant Steven Finn a first Test wicket.
The 20-year-old, much improved from his tense opening spell yesterday, deserved a second in what was a probing spell.
Swann said: “We got a bit of reverse swing going and there’s always a little bit of turn, the odd one hitting a crack and going a bit more. So we’re confident.”
Although Swann has his side down as firm favourites, he was impressed enough by the battling knocks of Tamim Iqbal (86) and Mushfiqur Rahim (79) to sound a note of caution.
‘‘Bangladesh batted very well today and that showed we are going to have our work cut out to take the last 10 wickets,’’ said the 30-year-old.
‘‘That’s no surprise after the one-day series. They’ve shown they have some very capable players.’’ Swann’s fourth wicket, that of Mushfiqur, came courtesy of a supreme reaction catch at short midwicket from substitute fielder James Tredwell, who had been on the field just a matter of moments in place of Cook.
