THE size of the challenge Scott Borthwick has set himself by leaving Durham for Surrey was underlined by yesterday's England selection.

Among the four spinners chosen for the Test series in Bangladesh are Surrey duo Gareth Batty and Zafar Ansari.

Borthwick has stressed he is not going to the Oval purely as a batsman and is keen to develop his leg spin.

While Batty's selection is a short-term measure, Borthwick may have to hope that Ansari does well enough in Bangladesh to become an England regular. Otherwise they could end up competing for a Surrey place.

“They have told me it's up to me to bowl well enough,” said Borthwick. “Surrey is a club with massive tradition and the Oval is a fantastic place to bat and to bowl leg-spin, so I want to do well enough in both to push my own England claims.

“I'm going for purely cricketing reasons. It's a big challenge and I'm really looking forward to it. But I love Durham. The club has been fantastic to me since I was a kid, which is why I took a long time to make a decision.”

Borthwick was delighted to sign off from Emirates Riverside on Thursday with the win which ensured the sides will meet again in division one next season.

“It was a fantastic game – it had everything,” he said. “There was Keaton Jennings' double hundred, Jason Roy almost scoring two centuries, Graham Onions taking eight wickets in the match, a seven-for from Sam Curran and a brilliant finish.”

Jennings has moved up to second in the Professional Cricketers' Association's Most Valuable Player rankings. He took 52 points from the Surrey match and is 21 behind Warwickshire's Jeetan Patel, who has the chance to move further ahead in today's Royal London Cup final against Surrey.

Jennings is 38 ahead of third-placed Adam Lyth, who is one in front of Yorkshire team-mate Tim Bresnan.
