USMAN Arshad can expect an extended run in Durham's one-day team under the captaincy of Paul Collingwood, especially with Mark Wood unavailable.

As the ECB continue to monitor Wood's progress on his return from two ankle operations, he has been ruled out of this evening's Twenty20 match against Derbyshire and Sunday's Royal London Cup tie against Yorkshire.

Both games are at Emirates Riverside and Durham can still scramble into the quarter-finals of both competitions.

In the NatWest T20 Blast they need to win their final group game and hope that Warwickshire lose at Old Trafford. They could also still overtake Yorkshire on run rate if they lose at Northampton.

Derbyshire are on the same number of points, so they also have an outside chance of qualifying.

Collingwood was full of praise for Arshad, who was recalled to the team in Wednesday's RLC win against Warwickshire and took three for 50.

“We will have to come up with a plan for him because when he gets it right he has some serious skill,” said the captain.

“He would benefit from a run in the team after being in and out. He has a lot of potential and we have to stick with him.”

Collingwood was also impressed by wicketkeeper Stuart Poynter on his competitive debut on Wednesday, but faces a tricky decision over whether to play him tonight or bring in an extra batsman.

If Durham were to reach T20 finals day at Edgbaston on August 20 Poynter and Barry McCarthy would not be available because they are again in the Ireland squad for two one-day internationals against Pakistan in Dublin.

Durham batted poorly in the RLC at Derby this season, slumping to 75 for seven before Ryan Pringle's 125 lifted the total to 216. A century by Ben Slater set up a seven-wicket win for Derbyshire, who include Test batsman Hamish Rutherford and his fellow New Zealander Neil Broom.
