PAUL Collingwood defied the obvious pain from his hand injuries to build a useful lead for his side at Southport this afternoon.

His battling innings ended on 50 as Jimmy Anderson finally earned some rewards for the sort of high-class bowling which demands his recall for the second Test.

It was tough on debut boy Adam Hickey to have to face him with the new ball and he fell for nought when he edged behind.

But Paul Coughlin, who went in ahead of Hickey, contributed a diligent 26 to a seventh-wicket stand of 71 then a last-wicket stand of 41 took Durham to 291, giving them two batting points and a lead of 87.

On 34 Collingwood had to send for the physio, but when faced shortly afterwards with a possible battering from Anderson with the new ball he had the audacity to hook a six.

A pulled four in Anderson's next over was followed by having to fend off a throat ball, which brought more pain as the enthralling battle continued.

Like several batsmen in this match, he had his share of luck, while bowlers must sometimes have wondered how they weren't taking wickets.

On nine Collingwood skied an attempted pull of Kyle Jarvis over the wicketkeeper and, like everyone else, he was beaten several times by Anderson. He also had to bat away a ball from Jarvis which he almost played on to his stumps.

Of the two big straight hits he tried off the spinners one just cleared the rope and the other fell into space at deep cover.

Coughlin fell in the sixth over of the new ball when he shaped to drive an excellent away swinger from Jarvis which shaved his off stump.

Chris Rushworth made 30 before he was last out, sweeping Matt Parkinson to deep backward square. Graham Onions was unbeaten on 15.
