DURHAM made an encouraging start to their pursuit of Warwickshire's 313 as they reached 46 without loss at lunch on the second day at Edgbaston.

Mark Stoneman and Keaton Jennings safely negotiated four overs from Chris Woakes, who has been called into the England squad as a replacement for knee injury victim Ben Stokes.

Woakes will depart this evening for Chester-le-Street and his replacement in the Warwickshire side has yet to be named.

Keith Barker's swing did not pose its usual problems as Stoneman initially took the attack to the left-armer, whose six overs cost 28.

Jennings caught his partner on 22 with a back-foot shot through the covers for four off Barker and was one ahead on 23 at the break.

Durham needed an hour to take the two remaining Warwickshire wickets, both going to Graham Onions after Jeetan Patel and Chris Wright had put on 52.

Patel dominated the early scoring, driving freely against James Weighell and Brydon Carse.

There was little sign of a breakthrough, although Weighell went within a hair's-breadth of bowling Patel when swinging one in from round the wicket.

A double change brought on Onions and Barry McCarthy, who saw successive balls clipped to the leg-side boundary by Wright.

Patel made 27 before miscuing a drive to lob a catch to mid-off and in his next over Onions hit the top of Wright's middle stump.
