SCOTT Borthwick and Jack Burnham capitalised on a stroke of luck each to take their stand to 145 this morning.

Burnham was still there at lunch on 73 but Borthwick fell 13 minutes before the break, lbw pushing forward to Gareth Batty for 77. With Ben Stokes on eight, Durham reached 275 for three, trailing by 182.

On a sunny morning it was expected to be a trial by spin on a pitch shaven at the ends, but although Zafar Ansari bowled for the first hour it was a further 30 minutes before Batty brought himself on.

Borthwick might have gone on 28, when Ben Foakes fumbled a stumping chance off Ansari, who posed a few problems.

Burnham was on 29 when he shaped to hook Tom Curran and the ball appeared to hit his glove before lobbing into space on the off side.

Borthwick drove Matthew Dunn through extra cover for his seventh four to reach 50 off 110 balls then skied a hook over long leg for six off Mat Willans.

Burnham was also not in full control of a hook off the South African paceman, which flew to fine leg for the four which took him to 50 off 84 balls.

It was his fourth boundary to go with the two sixes in his overnight 21.

Although he had exercised caution against Ansari this morning, he got after Batty as soon as the Surrey skipper came on. The third ball was lofted over extra cover for four and the fifth just cleared the man halfway back at mid-on.
