DURHAM were left to face a trial by spin after Surrey's two twirlers removed Keaton Jennings and Mark Stoneman in successive over following an opening stand of 114.

One minute they were going merrily along, the next they were back in the hutch, leaving Scott Borthwick and Jack Burnham to take the score to 149 for two at tea.

Burnham showed amazing confidence for one so young, driving the last ball before the break for his second six off left-armer Zafar Ansari.

Jennings was enjoying such success with the lap/sweep, both orthodox and reverse, off the spinners that he got carried away.

Attempting one too many, he was bowled by Ansari for 53 to end what had been an untroubled partnership.

It was the third time in four innings that the openers had passed 70 and they looked so comfortable that something substantial was beckoning.

Batty had been slow to introduce spin, waiting until 85 were on the board after 21 overs before Ansari's first ball was driven to deep cover by Stoneman to bring up his 50 off 59 balls.

Two perfectly-executed reverse laps by Jennings off Ansari were followed by an orthodox one off Batty's first ball to reach 50 off 89 balls with nine fours.

But after Jennings departed with an angry swish of the bat the next over revealed that umpire Billy Taylor does give lbws after all. Stoneman, propping forward, was beaten by slight turn from Batty and was given out for 57.

Burnham had made only five when he drove Ansari for a straight six. He was on 20 at tea with Borthwick on 14.
