DURHAM'S new paceman, Brydon Carse, claimed the notable scalp of Kumar Sangakkara on an otherwise testing morning at the Oval.
The Sri Lankan master looked in his usual imperious form in making 26 as an unbeaten 53 by Arun Harinath took Surrey to 110 for two at lunch.
Sangakkara tried to run Carse's seventh ball away on the off side and chopped it into his stumps, but the only other wicket went to Ben Stokes.
He straightened one off what looks a run-laden pitch to take out Rory Burns off stump, otherwise the four left-handers at the top of the Surrey order generally looked comfortable.
Chris Rushworth looked very unlucky not to gain an lbw verdict against Burns in the third over, but on a sunny morning it was unfortunate for Durham to lose the toss.
