DURHAM'S Jack Burnham was named yesterday in the 15-man England squad for the Under 19 World Cup in Bangladesh.

The top order batsman from Esh Winning will celebrate his 19th birthday during a warm-up week in Dubai, where they will play a practice match against South Africa on January 18.

Durham's other England Under 19 player, Adam Hickey, is one of three from the recent triangular series in Sri Lanka who have not made the World Cup squad.

The all-rounder's spin bowling will not be required because of the presence of Hampshire pair Brad Taylor, the captain, and Mason Crane, who made his first-class debut against Durham in August.

Burnham also made his debut that month, scoring a half-century against Yorkshire at Scarborough.

Although he top-scored with 32 in one match against Sri Lanka, the batsmen generally struggled in the series, which also involved India. Hickey was left out after the first match.

The World Cup squad also includes Yorkshire seamer Jared Warner, from Wakefield, and the first match is against Fiji in Chittagong on January 27. The group also includes West Indies and Zimbabwe.

Former Durham captain David Graveney, the Under 19s chairman of selectors, said: “We have been building towards this for some time and we are further down the road than in Dubai two years ago, when we finished third. There is no reason why this group cannot do as well or better.

“The results in Sri Lanka were disappointing, but it was a valuable learning experience in conditions similar to Bangladesh.”
