IF David Willey thinks he can ask his new Yorkshire coach Jason Gillespie for a bit of advice on Monday when the two meet up in Australia’s Big Bash, he is likely to be disappointed.

The new White Rose all-rounder, dubbed ‘a future world star of Twenty20 cricket’ by Jack Brooks, will line up for Perth Scorchers against Gillespie’s Adelaide Strikers at the WACA.

It will be Willey’s debut for the champions after being given permission by the ECB to miss England Lions duty to play Down Under.

“I look forward to seeing him do well in most games,” said Gillespie, who has Adil Rashid in his squad. “Just not against the Strikers.

“It is a bit weird (coming up against Willey). That will be quite interesting. It’s such a unique situation for me, and this must be what the IPL coaches have to deal with.

“If he comes and asks for advice, I’ll just put my fingers in my ears and give it the ‘la, la, la, la’.

“I think it’s a great opportunity for him to show how good he is - and Rash too.”

Willey will link up with Gillespie and Yorkshire in April after a busy winter, culminating in the World Twenty20 in India.

And he has been backed to shine for the county by his new coach.

“We know what he’s about in one-day cricket,” added Gillespie. “He’s an explosive batsman who swings the ball. But I certainly see him him playing a role in the longer form of the game.

“I wouldn’t expect him to play every game. With our depth of seam bowling, we’re not going to need to flog him. But there’s an opportunity.

“His goal is to play Test cricket, and he feels coming to Yorkshire can help him achieve that.”

Whilst in Perth, Willey is likely to meet up with Yorkshire quick and former Northamptonshire team-mate Brooks, who flies out on Monday for three months of grade cricket with Willetton Dragons.

Brooks may even spend some time net bowling with the Scorchers if schedules allow.

“I’m sure David’s pretty confident,” said Brooks. “He’s probably a little bit nervous, but he’s the kind of guy who rises to the occasion - he always has done.

“He likes to get stuck in and doesn't worry what people think of him.

“If he starts well, he could end up having a really good tournament. He will be a surprise name for a few guys because they won’t know too much about him just yet.

“I think he’s a future world star of Twenty20 cricket.

“I genuinely think he’ll have a good tournament because the ball comes on nicely out there. He hits a long ball and his bowling is more than useful.

“I’d back him to have a good tournament. The Scorchers have historically done quite well.”

Gillespie, Rashid and the Strikers got their competition off to a flying start yesterday with an opening night win over competition favourites Melbourne Stars,

Defending 187-5, Rashid returned an excellent 2-27 in a 19-run victory.
