FIRST team coach Jason Gillespie hailed his record-breaking Yorkshire side as they ended their campaign with victory over Sussex.

Having set the visitors a target of 309 on the final day at Headingley, the Tykes bowled Sussex out for 208 to secure a 100-run win and in turn condemn the Hove outfit to relegation from Division One.

That means the White Rose county finish the campaign with 286 points – a record since the Championship was split into two divisions in 2000 – as well as becoming the first side to win 11 matches in a single season.

And Gillespie admitted he never set out to win the Championship by such a margin as 68 points, but felt the team deserved all of the plaudits that have come their way during their second title-winning season in succession.

“The boys are stoked for the records and we’re delighted for them,” he said. “We’ve played some wonderful cricket, and that points record is going to take some beating.

“I don’t mean to sound arrogant but it’s been a special summer with 11 wins. With the points we’ve tallied up, it’ll take a hell of a season to top that.

“Who thinks you can win it by 68 points? You’re happy to win it by one.

“We’ve won it differently (than in 2014). You want to put pressure on yourselves to win it again, but credit to these lads.

“In the dressing room they spoke with a lot of passion last season about they wanted to go back to back and create history. For them to back those words up with actions makes it extra special.”

Having opted against declaring overnight, Yorkshire’s final pair of Tim Bresnan and Sidebottom saw out nine balls before Bresnan (55) holed out to long-on off the bowling of Steve Magoffin.

That left Sussex a minimum of 92 overs to bat for either a draw or win that would confirm their survival, but they lost Ed Joyce in just the fourth over as he was bowled by a full Jack Brooks delivery via an inside edge.

Brooks then accounted for Chris Jordan (20) and Matt Machan (16) to bring up the 300th first-class wicket of his career before Bresnan dismissed Chris Nash (17) and Luke Wright (2) to reduce the visitors to 60-5 shortly before lunch.

By that time Sussex knew a defeat would see them relegated after Hampshire secured victory over Nottinghamshire at Trent Bridge, and Michael Yardy – having been given a standing ovation ahead of the final innings of his career – looked to knuckle down after the interval.

He added 81 for the sixth wicket with Ben Brown before gloving an attempted hook off Bresnan to Alex Lees at first slip to fall for 41.

Brown (42) departed 14 balls later to Adil Rashid, and the leg-spinner then accounted for Magoffin in his next over.

Ashar Zaidi (47) gave Sussex a glimmer of hope before being trapped LBW by Adam Lyth while last man Chris Liddle fell in the same fashion to Rashid to spark celebrations among the Yorkshire players.
