Andrew Gale and Jack Leaning scored brilliant unbeaten hundreds to put Yorkshire in charge of their LV= County Championship match against Nottinghamshire after two days at Headingley.

Gale scored his fourth hundred in 14 Championship matches against Notts and also topped 7,000 first-class career runs during an innings which helped the champions recover from 51-3 in reply to 224 and close on 302-3 from 82 overs.

The White Rose captain’s 144 off 224 balls was backed up by in-form Jack Leaning, whose 107 off 168 marked his third hundred of the summer.

They shared a record fourth-wicket partnership for Yorkshire against Notts of 251 in 61 overs either side of tea against an attack including current and former international seamers Stuart Broad and Australian Ben Hilfenhaus.

"I felt in good touch from the word go, although I've felt in good touch for the last month or so without making a big score," said Gale.

"I seem to play better when the team's chips are down coming in at 30-2. It was important somebody stood up, and a great partnership between me and Jack puts us in command.”

As much as Gale led the way, Leaning, 21, continues to impress hugely.

He looked at ease against Broad, the pick of the Notts attack with 2-55 from 17 overs, as he went beyond 650 runs for the season.

Gale says “there is no better young batsman in the country at the minute”.

"Jack's going from strength to strength,” he added. “He's so calm out there for a young kid and in control of his game. I think he looks the all-round package now.

"They've thrown everything at him. Broad and Hilfenhaus, two international bowlers trying to bounce him out, and he didn't look in any trouble at all.

"I suspect the Lions or the EPP will come knocking and they will take a good look at him in the winter. Who knows where he could go?”

Leaning scored his maiden Championship century in the reverse fixture at Trent Bridge in April.

After Notts advanced from 169-8 overnight thanks mainly to a ninth-wicket stand of 65 between Luke Wood and Hilfenhaus, Yorkshire lost England Test duo Adam Lyth and Gary Ballance before lunch.

In their last appearance before the Ashes on July 8, Lyth was trapped lbw for a three-ball duck by Broad and Ballance (14) caught at leg gully off Hilfenhaus, leaving the score at 28-2.

Alex Lees had his middle stump uprooted by Broad shortly after lunch before Gale and Leaning hurt the visitors badly.

Gale reached his ton off 153 balls and Leaning off 155, with the latter posting his milestone by hitting left-arm spinner Samit Patel for six over long-on inside the day’s last five overs.

Meanwhile, Aaron Finch has been sent for a second scan after being hit in the rib cage during a second XI match against Worcestershire on Monday.

Finch was coughing up blood immediately after taking the blow, and it is thought he has a bruised lung. He is doubtful for Friday’s T20 Blast game at Leicestershire.
