DURHAM made good progress at Arundel this morning as they captured six wickets to leave Sussex on 135 for eight at lunch, 166 behind.

After bowling both openers the previous evening, Chris Rushworth picked up three more wickets to move past 50 first-class scalps for the season.

When he knocked out Ajmal Shahzad's off stump in the last over before the break four of his five victims had been bowled.

Good bowling held the batsmen in check on a pleasant morning and while Sussex skipper Ed Joyce battled away two of his colleagues got out looking for runs.

Matt Machan pulled Graham Onions to mid-wicket, where Keaton Jennings leapt to his left to pull off a remarkable one-handed catch.

The dangerous Luke Wright made only five before he groped forward wide of off stump and edged Rushworth to Michael Richardson.

Paul Coughlin needed treatment for a hand injury after trying to stop a straight drive by Ben Brown, whose concentration seemed to be disturbed as he edged the next ball to the wicketkeeper.

In contrast to Durham scoring 147 runs on the first morning, Sussex were rendered almost strokeless by disciplined bowling and a lot of their runs went to third man.

Joyce had made 13 off 57 balls when he edged John Hastings through third slip for four and in the Australian's next over the left-hander guided a more controlled shot to the same boundary.

But Durham had posted two gullies for Joyce for most of the morning and it appeared Hastings had set him up nicely as the next ball was banged in a little harder and he poked it straight to Jennings.

When Rushworth returned for his second spell of the morning he he nipped one back to bowl Chris Nash, batting at seven following illness. Then Shahzad went two overs later, leaving Sussex to score a further 16 to avoid the follow-on.
