PAUL Collingwood must be wishing he could lose the toss. For the second successive game he put the opposition in and had cause to regret it.

Following Yorkshire’s 270 opening stand at sun-baked Headingley last week, there was at least the excuse of heavy cloud cover after the morning session was washed out.

But as Warwickshire passed 90 with one wicket down the captain came on to claim a wicket in his third over as the visitors reached 139 for two at tea.

While Graham Onions returned after his two-month absence, it was another player reappearing after injury, Ian Westwood, who prospered.

The diminutive left-hander has been out with a broken finger but was rarely in trouble in advancing to 40 before he edged Collingwood to Gordon Muchall at slip.

The visitors’ acting captain, Varun Chopra, was first out, chopping an attempted cut off John Hastings into his stumps to depart for 21.

There was some early swing for Onions and Chris Rushworth, but too many balls could be left as the Warwickshire openers coped more comfortably than Collingwood would have hoped.

He took his wicket with the first ball of an over and Jonathan Trott took six runs off the remaining five.

Collingwood then recalled Onions and Mark Wood in the hope of unsettling Trott, who is considered vulnerable to the short ball after his troubles.

Any attempted bouncers were ill-directed, however, and the ex-England man continued to progress rapidly in partnership with Will Porterfield. They put on 41 in the last seven overs before the break.
