RICHMOND’S Karen Jobling has been crowned Yorkshire Veteran Ladies Golf Association champion – and will bid to follow up in the English Senior Women’s Amateur Championship this week.

Jobling, an England international, came out on top after three days of competition at Crosland Heath Golf Club.

Jobling’s score of 81 on the opening day – the ninth best from an 82-strong field – was enough to secure one of 16 spots in the knockout stages and she came into her own in the matchplay to win the 2017 YVLGA Championship.

Jobling recorded an emphatic 7&6 victory over Shipley’s Linda Ireland in the quarter-finals before overcoming top seed Pat Wrightson, of Huddersfield, 3&2 in the semi-finals.

There was no stopping Jobling in the final as she proved too good for Abbeydale’s Cathy Riley, winning 6&5 to lift the title.

Jobling will now feature in the English Senior Women’s Amateur Championship at South Staffordshire that runs until May 19.

RAMSIDE hopes to unearth the North-East’s next Graeme Storm or Chris Paisley by awarding four Michael Adamson Junior Golf Scholarships for 2017.

Tilly Barton (Hobson), Emily Baxter (Houghton-le-Spring), Adam Charlton (Ramside) and Lewis Reay (Ramside) will receive one year’s free membership, use of Ramside’s two championship courses, golf academy and driving range, plus tuition with Ramside’s team of three coaches.

The foursome were chosen from more than 50 applicants after impressing PGA professional and lead coach Kevin Jackson during a skills test, playing assessment and sit-down interview.

Helen Roseberry, director of golf, said: “This scholarship is named in honour of my father, Michael, who passionately believed in providing opportunity for deserving people in all areas of Ramside Estates’ business.

“He also loved golf, which is why we want to provide talented young golfers with a springboard to achieve great things in a sport which brings so much pleasure to so many people.”

The scholarships are provided annually to two boys and two girls, aged 10-16, and seeks to identify young people with outstanding personal character and dedication to golf.

Kevin Jackson, PGA professional, said: “This year’s scholars are all exceptional individuals and I’m looking forward to helping them develop as golfers and people.”

Charlton, 14, reduced his handicap to four in 2016.

He won the gross title at the Durham County Golf Union Under- 14s Championship at Darlington last year.

Barton won the Durham County Ladies Clement Matchplay Trophy at Bishop Auckland in 2016 and has already earned her county junior colours.
