A TEAM of local golfers will be going for glory at the home of golf.

Hartlepool College of Further Education’s golfers are taking part in the British Colleges Open, which takes place at the world famous St Andrew’s course in Scotland from ‪March 6-8.

The team will be joined by Clifford Jackson – the PGA professional at Seaton Carew Golf Club who has been coaching the youngsters – as well as Daniel Farman who is Sports Maker at the College.

To help fund the trip the team has been boosted by a sponsorship deal with Hartlepool-based Utility Alliance.

The College has won the North-East Championship for the last five years, and that has helped to attract players from right across the region.

Shaun Hope, head of student recruitment at Hartlepool College of FE, said: “We are extremely grateful to Utility Alliance for their support of our Golf Academy.

“Without this level of support these young aspiring golfers would not be able to play in such a high-profile competition at one of the world’s most famous golf courses.”

The golfers practice three times a week under the watchful eye of Jackson at Seaton. They also spend time on fitness work in the College’s Luminary fitness suite.

Utility Alliance directors Bob Moore and Phill Moore met the team at Seaton as they finalised their preparations for the event, and were impressed by the talent on show.

Bob said: “We are delighted to be able to sponsor the team, Clifford has done a great job coaching them and we wish them well at St Andrew’s.

“It looks like a tough competition, but the lads all appear to be very confident and from what we saw down at Seaton Carew there looks to be a lot of good players in the team.

“As a Hartlepool-based employer we will do anything we can to help young talent flourish, and we look forward to working with the College and Seaton Carew Golf Club in the future.”
