JAMES Wilson, from Tyneside Golf Club, will hope to emulate the feats of European Ryder Cup stars Justin Rose and Matthew Fitzpatrick next week after qualifying for the final of the 2016 Telegraph BMW Junior Golf Championship at Portugal’s prestigious Quinta do Lago resort.

Rose and Fitzpatrick are just two of the famous players to have triumphed in the event’s 30-year history, and Wilson will be one of 12 boys and nine girls aiming to add their names to the winners’ list when the tournament takes place in the Algarve from October 31 to November 4.

The 17-year-old from Newcastle claimed his place in the elite line-up after qualifying with an impressive round of five-under-par at his home club in June.

Entering its fourth decade, the prestigious 54-hole stroke play competition – which will be held on Quinta do Lago’s North Course – will be returning to the resort for the fourth successive year, with the finalists coming from all parts of the British Isles and Ireland.

TALENTED young players have been selected for the England Golf Under-16 regional squads for the 2016/17 training programme.

They follow in the footsteps of players such as Masters champion Danny Willett and the world number two amateur Bronte Law, who both came through the England regional squad system.

Across the north there are promising golfers who will take part. The squads are:

Girls: Jessica Baker (Gosforth Park Ladies), Harriet Barker (Carus Green), Rosie Belsham (Whitley Bay), Abby Roper (Seascale), Katie Sibley (Carlisle), Caitlin Whitehead, (Kendal). Coach J J Vallely, Manager Bryan Ross.

Boys: Dominic Barron-Holden (Kendal), Adam Charlton (Ramside), William Coxon (Kendal), Duran Gun (George Washington), Harrison Hodgson (Darlington), Joseph Robson (Hexham), William Skipp (Eaglescliffe), William Wilkinson (Westerhope). Coach Kendal McWade, Manager Bryan Ross.

ROCKLIFFE Hall’s first ever ‘drive’ to encourage more women to take up golf was a huge success and raised £300 for Breast Cancer Awareness month.

The Ladies Golf Day was held to give ladies the opportunity to sample the game, play the course and enjoy the clubhouse surroundings. During the special pink-themed event, in support of breast cancer awareness month, guests enjoyed a pink lemonade welcome drink followed by the golfing activity of each lady’s choice, depending on her ability, finished off with a delicious ‘Ladies Day’ traditional afternoon tea.

Rockliffe Hall’s PGA Professional team was on hand to give an introduction to golf and tips for improving golfers. A raffle was also held and all money raised on the day will be donated to ‘Wear it Pink’ which each year raises around £2m during Breast Cancer Awareness Month for the UK’s largest breast cancer charity, Breast Cancer Now.
