SAM DONALD claimed a second Northern Masters title in three years at Rockliffe Hall.

Donald, from Eaglescliffe, was at his best to claim a four-shot victory over a clutch of players around the lengthy Hurworth track.

The 20-year-old posted a superb opening round of 68, the best score of the day, and he admitted he might have taken his foot off the pedal on his way to a second round 75.

Donald’s one under par total of 143 was comfortably clear of John Kirkpatrick’s 147; a score matched by Richmond's Michael Henson (75 72) and Boldon's Carl Thompson (73 74).

Donald's Durham County teammates Cameron Wallace and Rhys Thompson - two likely lads who might have come through - both posted a second round 73s for 149 in windy conditions.

Donald, who won the Masters title in 2014, said: "I've shocked myself a bit to be honest. I haven't played for a week and didn't expect much but I was three under par after three and after that just attacked everything.

"It paid off and I was five under after nine and I just really like the course and know it like the back of my hand having worked here at one time."

Rockliffe’s golf and estate director, Davy Cuthbertson, said: “This year’s NGM was another very successful event. All the players enjoyed the day, the sun shone and the wind kept everyone on their toes, but we received some fabulous feedback. Congratulations to Sam on winning the event for a second time. A huge achievement for someone so young.”
