LUCCA JACKSON is still celebrating after becoming the Wee Wonders British Champion at St Andrews – and his sister has since delivered her own bit of magic on the fairways too.

The six-year-old from Seaton Carew overcame a strong field at the home of golf to claim the title on the 27th hole from Dubai’s Ruiri Cooper.

Lucca shot a closing round 35 to follow up his opening 34 and 36 to finish on 105, a shot clear of his nearest rival.

Lucca had his dad, and coach, Clifford Jackson – the Seaton Carew professional – on his bag throughout the three days.

His proud dad said: “From a family point of view it was absolutely fantastic. To see him hole his putt at the last and for him to win it was absolutely brilliant. What was great to see from him, even though he is so young, was that he showed tremendous consistency throughout and you can see that from his cards.”

To cap it off for the Jacksons, Lucca’s elder sister Ella went onto win the Durham Junior Girls Stableford Championship at Wynyard.

Ella, 12, carded an impressive 39 points which included an eagle from a 60-yard chip on her way to the title. She finished nine points clear of Durham City’s Emily Atkinson.

She said: “I am really proud of what I achieved particularly over the last few weeks, I can’t wait to see what I can achieve next year.”

Cliff added: “Ella has achieved so much since the beginning of the year when she decided to focus on golf rather than gymnastics. She was a 54 handicap when she played the Graeme Storm Junior Open in April and she is now playing off 34. I feel the sky is the limit for her.”

SUCCESS for the Seaton Carew Junior section did not stop there, with Jack Burton claiming the Macdonalds Junior Tour Golf Final title at Linden Hall last weekend.

It was the same day as Burton, 11, formed part of the 16-man Durham team which won the Regional Cup at Linden along with his Seaton Carew team-mates.

Jack claimed the best nett and best gross in his age category, while Ella earned the best nett and Lucca came fifth in his age group. Burton had also qualified for the Wee Wonders final in Scotland for the second year in a row.

WEARSIDE Golf Club clinched its place in the Golfplan Insurance PGA Pro-Captain Challenge Final after a tense finish which saw a four-way tie at the top of the leaderboard.

The club’s vice-captain Howard Walton and PGA Professional Stephen McNally recorded an eight under par round of 64 at the North Yorkshire venue.

But three other teams also finished on the same score meaning the Wearside duo winning on count back after an impressive back nine.

Walton and McNally will now play in the £25,000 final which takes place at Spanish destination Lumine Mediterranea Beach & Golf Community.

Two handicapper Walton was a stand in for the day as the Wearside captain David Smith is recovering from shoulder surgery.

“We’ve been joking that the captain will be pulling rank and coming out to Spain with me,” smiled McNally. “I should think it’ll be Howard who plays, but it was an interesting story to come out of the day.”
