THERE was success for Ryton on their own patch in the County Teams Handicap Championship last weekend.

The four-man team finished five shots clear of second placed Eaglescliffe to claim the trophy and much of the success was down to the impressive Richard Muldoon.

The 18-handicapper posted back to back 67s, three under, to help Ryton finish on a 211 shot total. Malcolm Bell (+3) Stephen Henderson (+1) and Steve Irving (+4) all played their part.

Eaglescliffe were second with a 216 tally, with 8.1 handicapper D Ray shining brightest with a level par showing. M Duffield and M Popple carded three over totals, with 5.6 handicapper Joshua Thompson on nine over.

Crook’s team of Steve Bottoms, Alan Brack, Geoffrey Hughes and Stephen Ludkin were two shots further back in third.

THERE was a degree of disappointment for Wynyard’s Andrew Wilson, Masham’s Daniel Brown and South Moor’s Chris Handy at the Brabazon Trophy last week.

England’s Jamie Bower won the prestigious English amateur strokeplay title by a stroke in a thrilling final round at London Golf Club.

The Yorkshireman shot two-under par 70 to finish on 12-under, pipping long-time Aussie leader Cameron Davis, whose title challenge fizzled out with a three putt on the final hole.

It continued a superb run by England internationals, following Alfie Plant’s win in the Lytham Trophy and Scott Gregory’s victory in the Amateur Championship. The next challenge is the European Team Championship in France in early July.

Brown, formerly of Bedale, and Darlington-born Wilson still recorded decent, respective, 18th and 24th placed finishes. There was just a shot to separate the two. Handy missed the cut after posting a two round six-over total.
