DARLINGTON’S Andrew Wilson will head to the final stage of Open Championship qualifying next week after shining brightly at Northumberland Golf Club.
Wilson, Northumberland’s Andrew Minnikin and Bedlington’s Mathew Webb have ensured there will still be North-East hopefuls looking to clinch an appearance at Royal Troon after some impressive golf at local qualifying.
With four places up for grabs at Northumberland, Wynyard Golf Club’s Wilson, who could still afford three bogeys such was his quality across the rest of his round, shone brightest with a brilliant three-under 69.
Minnikin was part of a three-strong group consisting of Scotland’s Callum Cochrane and Webb to have shot 71 behind Wilson to clinch a place at one of the final qualifying venues next Tuesday.
