CITY of Newcastle outpointed Eaglescliffe to win the Inter County Foursomes final last weekend.

In horrible and changing conditions at Newbiggin, the Northumberland pair edged out their Durham counterparts.

The golf was very fantastic given the rain, snow and hailstones as well as sunshine and cold winds.

Four holes were flooded at the top end of the course so they played another four for a second time.

City went one up at the tenth and were all square after 11. City then won 17 and 18 to go into those four holes - 1, 2, 17 and 18 - two up.

Then first was halved and Phil Ridden sank a birdie putt at the second for City to win 3 and 2.

Eaglescliffe duo Tom Smith and Will Skipp battled all the way but Ridden and Alex Dixon had done just enough.

THERE was a North-East double in the top five of the English Boys Open last week when Jack Ainscough and Matty Lamb enhanced their reputations on a national level.

Ainscough, competing his first McEvoy Trophy, displayed his quality on the fairways and around the greens by finishing second behind Kilkenny’s Mark Power.

The Hartlepool Golf Club champion, who hails from Shotton, finished his four rounds with a five-under 66 to end a shot clear of Dunston Hall’s Toby Briggs. He was a further shot clear of Frilford Heath’s Nicholas Elmey and Hexham’s Lamb.

Ryder Cup stars Lee Westwood and Justin Rose are among the prestigious competition’s previous winners and Ainscough has his eyes on lifting the trophy himself in 12 months’ time at Copt Heath.

The 16-year-old said: “It was a good week. I didn't play my best to be honest but it gives me huge confidence knowing I can still compete in a massive international championship when I'm only performing at 75 per cent.”

THE European Disabled Golf Association (EDGA) is about to launch its ‘Tournament Series 2016’ of 11 events in Europe which are staged for competitive golfers with disabilities.

The first event of the year is the EDGA Penina Open 2016, in the Algarve region of Portugal and during the summer ahead championships will take place in Austria, Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, France, Italy, Portugal, Scotland, Spain and Sweden.

EDGA believes that while 2016 will present competing players with great tournaments, this season offers “perfect timing” for forward-thinking companies and organisations who wish to support one of golf’s emerging and much talked-about international playing tours.
