DARLINGTON’S Andrew Wilson will have the ideal start to 2016 after being called up by his country.

Wilson, who plays out of Wynyard Golf Club, will be one of six from the England Men’s A squad bidding to regain the trophy in the Costa Ballena International Quadrangular Tournament in Spain on January 20-22.

Wilson will be joined by Ben Amor of Wiltshire, Will Enefer of Shropshire, Scott Gregory of Hampshire, Josh Hilleard of Somerset and Will Whiteoak of Yorkshire.

The Costa Ballena competition is played on a round robin basis against teams from Finland, Germany and the hosts, Spain. England won the tournament in 2014 and were only beaten in a title decider on the final day last year.

Wilson, 21, was runner-up in the North of England Youths last year and was tenth in the French Amateur Strokeplay Championship to secure his call-up.

CAMERON WALLACE narrowly missed out on a national title after competing in the grand final of the new-look 2015 Titleist Order of Merit, powered by HowDidiDo.

The Hartlepool prospect earned the right to play on the Brabazon Ryder Cup course at the Belfry courtesy of his consistent club performances throughout the year for Hartlepool Golf Club.

Wallace missed out on the top prize as Ireland took the team honours and one-handicapper Joanne Morris (Willesley Park) took the overall individual championship with an impressive net 75.

THE retiring captains at Thirsk & Northallerton Golf Club chipped out before the 2016 drive in.

In front of a large group of supporters Dave Brown and Dee Naughton completed their year as 2015 captains by finishing on the 18th before Ian Warnock, 2016 men’s captain, and Gill Fox, the new ladies captain, both had great drives on the first.

Ian and Gill will continue with the Friends of the Friarage MRI Scanner Appeal as their chosen charity for the year and will have bunkers by the 18th green as the charity hazards.
