Biggest pay day for Rob

ROBERT DINWIDDIE could break into the top 100 of the European Tour Order of Merit next weekend, after claiming the best result of his professional career to date.

The Barnard Castle golfer bounced back from the disappointment of a poor third round by carding a six under par 66 yesterday, which was enough to secure a share of sixth place at the MAPFRE Open de Andalucia by Valle Romano.

Dinwiddie, who survived only his second cut from six events since graduating to the main tour this season, showed signs of the form that helped him record back-to-back Challenge Tour triumphs last term.

The 24-year-old's performance in Spain also earned him his biggest cheque of almost £28,000 and he is now ranked 105 in the Order of Merit.

A similarly impressive display at the Estoril Open de Portugal, where he joins Graeme Storm after the Hartlepool player's heroics at last week's WG-CA Championships in Florida, would see Dinwiddie break into the top 100.

That's something he has set his sights on and his confidence is high after making seven birdies, spoilt by one bogey at the 11th in his final round at the Aloha Golf Club.

Had the former Walker Cup player not posted a three-over par total on Saturday following his excellent second round, he might have been in with a shout of winning his first title.

Eventual winner Thomas Levet, a Frenchman, was six shots ahead of Dinwiddie, along with Englishman Oliver Fisher.

Levet, though, won after a playoff.
