PAT McCormack has already knocked out one opponent in Australia but he has warned the rest of the boxers at the Commonwealth Games that he has not even got out of first gear yet.

The 69kg fighter will take on India’s Manoj Kumar in the semi-final with a possible clash with Northern Ireland’s Aidan Walsh awaiting in the gold-medal match.

And with the rest of the world’s eyes on the boxing competition in Gold Coast, McCormack is ready to put on a show.

He said: “If you get the gold you don’t go home a loser, you haven't been beaten.

“I knocked the first kid out and then gave the second kid a standing count but I think the competition is going to get a bit better now we're in the medal stages.

“But I haven't got out of first gear yet so I'm going to put on a show for the semis and the final.

The whole world is watching now so I'm going to show everyone what I'm about.

“It’s unbelievable here. Normally we go to countries like Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan so it's nice to come to a good country for once and get a bit of sun on your back.

“It’s not that big, it doesn't hold that many people but because it's small the atmosphere is unbelievable.”

It could be a family celebration for the McCormacks, with brother Luke fighting in the 64kg against Namibia’s Jonas Jonas in the semi-finals.

And just like his twin brother, Luke insists only gold will do as he questioned Jonas’ chances of causing him any problems in their bout.

He said: “You can't win a bronze or silver, you only get those by losing. So we want to be champions, go home as winners. I've had a little bit of a hard draw.

“I had who was said to be the best lad in the competition, and then in my second fight I had the home lad, so I've got past the two hard tests and I'm just pushing on again for gold.

“I've seen him box in the fight before me so I had a little watch when I was getting ready. He's big and tall and not going to come and fight, he's going to run away, so I'm just going to push on, push the fight towards him.

“I’m loving it. It's probably the best country I've ever been to. It’d be nice to get a gold medal here and end on happy terms.”
