DARLINGTON middleweight, Troy Williamson, enjoyed a successful pro debut in Scotland on Saturday night, writes Peter Mann.

Williamson, 25, opposed Bulgarian Borislav Zankov over four threes on the Sam Kynoch MGM Scotland card at the Meadowbank Sports Centre in Edinburgh, and stopped his opponent in three as he looks to carry the success he garnered in the amateurs over into the pro ranks.

With support travelling north of the border, Williamson took the fight to Zankov from the opening bell, dominated throughout before a huge body shot gave the Darlington protégé a dream start.

Afterwards Williamson said: “Zankov was a very tough, durable opponent who has been in there with some big names.

“They’ve taken a few more rounds than I did to get him out there so it was certainly a good KO win, and a test as to where I am at the minute.

“I took a really good following up there with me who made a lot of noise and I thank all who came and supported me for what is a great way to start my pro career.”

On the same card Seaham lightweight, Jordan Ellison, upset the odds when he defeated the previously undefeated Thomas Dickson for the sixth win of his career. The 20-year-old who had lost his previous five on the road, has a revenge mission in his next outing when he challenges the undefeated Sandman, Lewis Ritson, in a Tyne-Wear derby for the Northern Area title.

On the other hand, Williamson will be a part of the Darlington ‘Homecoming’ show at the Dolphin Centre on November 26 alongside fellow Darlington fighters Neil Hepper and Steve Cooper.

Troy added: “I’ve got a few days off now then back to the gym on Wednesday in order to kick on towards November 26.

“We’ll hopefully be able to sell the place out and I really can’t wait for that one.”
