Hamstrung Teesside Tornado tears up N-E track and field
TEESSIDE tornado Richard
Kilty achieved a memorable double
as records tumbled in the
North-East Track and Field
Championships at Gateshead International
Stadium. But the 18-
year-old Gateshead Harrier's celebrations
were tempered by a
hamstring injury which could
rule him out of the Great Britain
team in the big Loughborough
International this weekend.
Stockton-born Kilty shot to the
top of the UK Under-20 rankings
on Saturday as he stormed to
100m victory in a time of 10.62
secs after equalling his own
championship-best performance
of 10.79 secs in his heat.
And in the final event of the
second day he won the 200m
crown in a time of 21.43 secs,
slashing 19 hundredths of a second
off fellow Teessider John
Stewart's 1998 record.
But Kilty felt his hamstring go
as he hurtled round the bend -
but he did not ease off the throttle
in the home straight, finishing
nearly a second ahead of his
nearest rival.
Kilty, an English Schools double
gold medallist, is now hoping
he can shake off the injury in
time to represent Great Britain
over 200m at Loughborough.
He said: "I felt my hamstring
go on the bend and now I'm just
keeping my fingers crossed that
I will be all right for the weekend.
"I came into the championships
determined to break the
two sprint records and I'm really
pleased to have done that."
In almost ideal conditions 11
records went on the first day of
the championships and another
five new marks were set yesterday.
The opening day records included
the senior pole vault
where defending champion Mark
Christie (Sale) cleared 5.19m,
adding 19 cms to his own record.
Another Teesside sprinter,
Richard Hodgson, completed a
record-breaking double, winning
the under-15 100m in 11.21 secs
and the 200m in 22.60 secs.
Shildon's English Schools silver-
medallist narrowly avoided
colliding with a track judge who
wandered on to the track to set a
new record of 4 mins 34.02 secs in
the under-17 1500m.
