Kilty sets targets
TEESSIDE'S star teenage sprinter
Richard Kilty has set himself
a double record-breaking target
in this weekend's North-East
Track and Field Championships
at Gateshead International Stadium.
The 18-year-old Gateshead Harrier
will try to improve his own
under-20 100m mark of 10.79 secs,
set last year, before going on to
challenge the 200m record, which
stands at 21.62 secs.
Kilty made his seasonal debut
in sensational style this week
when he unofficially became the
UK's fastest-ever junior 150m
runner, clocking 15.8 secs in the
opening Start Fitness North-East
Athletics League at Jarrow's
Monkton Stadium.
The only listed UK under-20 to
run quicker than 16 seconds for
the rarely-raced distance was
World Junior Championships
sprint silver-medallist Jason
Gardner, who recorded a time of
15.99 secs in 1994 and later went
on to win an Olympic relay gold
medal.
Gardner's time, however, will
remain top of the rankings because
there was no wind gauge or
electronic timing at the Monkton
meeting. Now Kilty must wait
until later in the season to try to
get into the record books.
Kilty said: "It doesn't bother
me too much there was no electronic
timing at Monkton - I'm
happy with my performance."
Kilty, trained by former Great
Britain star Jared Deacon, will be
one of nearly 600 athletes at this
weekend's meeting.
