Dixon aiming for celebration
FORMER double British Universities
10,000m track champion
Alyson Dixon hopes to celebrate
her first England international
vest by leading Chester-le-Street
to a medal-winning performance
in today's National Six Stage
Road Relay Championships at
Sutton Coldfield.
The 29-year-old Wearsider has
been selected to represent England
in the prestigious Marseilles
10K next Thursday - the
reward for clocking one of the
fastest times as Chester-le-Street
won the Northern Six Stage title
at Catterick Garrison earlier
this month,
Dixon's delight makes up for
the disappointment of having to
drop out of last month's Inter
Counties Championships, losing
the chance of winning a place in
the Great Britain World Cross
Country Championships team.
"I've been on cloud nine since
hearing the news and hopefully
this will be the first of more representative
honours to come."
Dixon plans to mix road racing
with track work this summer
before making her half
marathon debut in Glasgow in
September.
Chester-le-Street, who won the
Northern title for a third time in
a row at Catterick with only
three of the team which triumphed
last year, finishing over
two minutes ahead of Wakefield,
have strength in depth and will
be looking to improve on their
third placing last year.
One of their latest recruits,
Angela Hibbs, runner-up in last
year's Edinburgh Marathon,
won this week's Spring Coastal
5K road race at New Marske in a
time of 17 mins 40 seconds, beating
clubmate Angela Hunter by
50 seconds.
