Masters treble for Brian

SUNDERLAND Harrier Brian Rushworth won his third British Masters gold medal in the annual BMF Cross Country Championships at Banbury.

The Wearside college lecturer won the over-45 category at the first attempt after two victories as an over-40 in 2004 and 2005.

Rushworth, who won the North-East senior menfs cross country title a record ten times before six consecutive victories in the regionfs veteran championships, finished fourth in Oxfordshire in a race headed by first-year over-40 athlete Rob Whalley (Bristol and West).

Defending champions Sunderland were forced to concede their 40-49 team title to Herne Hill Harriers.

The Wearsidersf other counters were Tom Doughty (18th), Tim Field (22nd) and Paul Merrison (48th).

Former English Schools silvermedallist Yusuf Aliu (Middlesbrough Mandale) opened his track season with a close-fought 100m victory in the Cyril Elliott meeting at Clairville Stadium, Middlesbrough. The 18-year-old Teessider clocked 11.7 secs, the same as runner-up Rob Patton, of Chester-le-Street, the Durham Schools 200m champion.

Sale Harrier Adam Rogers, a student at Sunderland University, improved his 400m hurdles personal-best by one tenth of a second with a winning time of 55.7 secs.

British No 1 Tim Don has kickstarted his Olympic year with a third-placed finish at the BG Triathlon World Cup series opener in Mooloolaba.

Don made an excellent start to his Beijing build-up when he finished behind Spainfs Javier Gomez, who avenged last yearfs loss to Australian rival Brad Kahlefeldt.

It was his first world cup race since breaking his arm in a bike crash at the Beijing Olympic Games test event last September.
