Timmons guides Sunderland to win
UTAH University student Lewis
Timmins inspired Morpeth Harriers
to an eighth victory in nine
years at the annual Elswick Good
Friday Relays at Lemington yesterday.
The 20-year-old Tynesider defied
near gale-force conditions to
lift the Northumbrians from
fourth to first on the second of
the four legs, turning a 21-second
deficit into a 41-second lead.
Former Commonwealth
Games marathon bronze medallist
Mark Hudspith and his
younger brother Ian helped extended
the winning margin over
runners-up Chester-le-Street to
an emphatic 1 min 58 sec.
Sunderland, winners of the
veterans race, were only a further
two seconds away in third.
Chester-le-Streets Alyson
Dixon made up for the disappointment
of having to drop out
of the Inter-Counties race at Nottingham,
where the North-East
womens team finished just outside
the medals in fourth place,
by setting a record of 12 mins 10
seconds as she led her club to victory
in the team race.
Northern junior cross country
champion Mary Ferrier won the
under-20 race in 12 mins 38 secs.
