Jemma on brink of second Olympic spot

HARTLEPOOL-born swim star Jemma Lowe continued her golden week at the British Olympic trials in Sheffield, smashing the British record in qualifying for the 100m butterfly.

Lowe, who was 18 on Monday, had already booked her Beijing berth after claiming gold on Tuesday in the 200m butterfly.

After ducking under the required Olympic standard time en route to winning her heat last night in the 100m, Lowe is in pole position to claim a second Beijing spot after qualifying fastest for this morning's final.

"That was brilliant. I was really confident going into the race because the split that I did at the Europeans the other week was really good," said Lowe, who recorded a time of 57.78.

"But I was still quite nervous because I really wanted to get the qualifying time. My aim going into the race was to not think about anything else but getting the qualifying time.

"I was really pumped up because I wanted it so badly. It's been quite a week for me.

"I thought after the 200m when I had a couple of days off, I just wanted to get the race over and done with. I've been nervous about this meet for ten months.

"There are four of us with the qualifying time now so I've still got it all to do."

Meanwhile, South Shields' Chris Cook, who landed gold in the 100m breaststroke earlier this week, missed out on the Olympic qualifying time in the 200m equivalent, finishing as the seventh fastest for this morning's final.

"It was all right - nothing amazing really," said Cook, who recorded a time of 2.16.41 minutes.

"I came for the 100m, got the gold and this was just a bonus for me.

"The 200m hasn't been going massively well for me recently. I didn't chase it as well as I should have done. It was always a bonus event for me."
