Livingston on course for Beijing after Cairo gold
NEW MARSKE Harrier Katy Livingston
has virtually booked her
place in the Great Britain Modern
Pentathlon team for the Beijing
Olympic Games by winning
the gold medal in the second
World Cup meeting in Cairo.
It was the Teessiders second
World Cup medal after winning
silver in Moscow last year.
She had already achieved the
Olympic qualifying standard
when she finished sixth in last
years European Championships.
Livingston went into the final
round of the shoot-fence-swimride-
run event in Egypt lying
second behind Frances Amelie
Caze.
But she quickly passed her
French rival in the 3K run and
went on to beat silver-medallist
Victoria Terreshuk by 17 seconds
for a total score of 5704 points C
68 points clear of the Ukrainian.
Livingston, one of The Northern
Echos Dreams of Gold hopefuls
for the 2012 London
Olympics, is the daughter of New
Marske stalwart and leading veteran
runner Tony Livingston.
ö Two young athletes saved the
day for the North-East by producing
medal-winning performances
in the National Cross
Country Championships at
Alton Towers.
Richmond and Zetlands
Northern and Yorkshire champion
Fergus Roberts won the
under-13 boys race by a massive
18 seconds, while Gatesheads
Inter Counties and English
Schools gold medallist Ross Murray
was runner-up in the under-
17 event, five seconds behind the
winner.
Otherwise it was a day to forget
for the region, with no team
medals to show for the runners
efforts.
Sunderland Harrier Mark
Hood, the double North-East
cross country champion, was the
regions first finisher in the senior
mens race in 21st position,
three places better than his previous
best placing in 2006.
Teessider Paul Lowe (North York
Moors) was the regions next man
home in 127th place.
New Marskes World Junior
Cross Country Championships
international Ricky Stevenson
was eighth in the under-20s, two
places ahead of Morpeths Nick
Swinburn, while Loftus and
Whitby runner Alec Duffield was
a creditable 14th.
Jon Taylor (21st), Ross Floyd
(60th) and Jonathon Young (86th)
helped Morpeth finish fourth in
the team event.
The womens race, won by Liz
Yelling, saw Chester-le-Streets
Fiona Burnie first home for the
region in 51st position, 12 places
ahead of Teesdales North-East
10K road race champion Claire
Robson.
Other North-East finishers included
Tracy Laws (Chester-le-
Street) 66th, Sarah Graham (Morpeth)
68th, Jess Trowbridge
(Gateshead) 76th and Tamsin
Clarke (Richmond & Zetland)
82nd.
Gatesheads Northern champion
Mary Ferrier was tenth in the
junior womens race, while Kate
Avery (Shildon), the Durham
Schools champion, was 15th in
the under-17 race, finishing two
places ahead of her great rival,
Laura Weightman (Morpeth), the
Northumberland Schools champion.
ö Chester-le-Streets Freya Murray
finished third behind Susan
Partridge (Victoria Park Glasgow)
and Catriona Morrison (Edinburgh)
in the Scottish Cross
Country Championships at
Falkirk. Clubmate Maxine Czarnecka
was seventh.
