Gold number four for Boyek

Shildon'S Great Britain junior international Cameron Boyek won his fourth gold medal in the Durham County Schools Cross Country Championships at Meadowfield.

The 18-year-old North-East junior cross country title holder and 1500m and 800m track champion, who competed in last summer's European Junior Championships in Tallin, Estonia, scored a 42-seconds victory over Gateshead's Barry Maskell representing Darlington in the senior boys' race and will now defend his Northern Inter-Counties title against Northumberland, Cumbria and Cleveland at Kirkby Stephen on February 4.

The senior girls' event was won by Durham City Harrier Chloe Price, the Durham Schools 800m track champion representing Easington district, who beat Darlington's Zoe Hewitson, last year's bronze-medallist, by 40 seconds.

In the intermediate girls' race Birtley's North-East Under-15 cross country champion and Northern Championships silver-medallist Lydia Turner (Derwentside), winner of last year's Junior Great North Run, beat Shildon's North-East Under-17 champion, Amy Etherington (Durham Central) by 12 seconds and will also defend her title at the Inter-Counties championships.

Senior Girls: 1 C Price (Easington) 17.47; 2 Z Hewitson (Darl) 18.27; 3 H Bradley (Dur C) 19.33. Intermediate Girls: 1 L Turner (Der) 15.20; 2 A Etherington (Dur C) 15.32; 3 A Fawcett (West Wearside) 15.52. Junior Girls: 1 C Bateman (Gates) 12.07; 2 R Findlay (SW Dur) 12.17; 3 E Daglish (Dur C) 12.21. Year 7 Girls: 1 L Cram (SW Dur) 8.59; 2 L Hunter (Darl) 9.03; 3 O Nelson (W Wear) 9.25.

Durham City's North-East cross country champion Rosie Smith was fifth and second North of England finisher in the McCain Cross Challenge in Cardiff.

The 26-year-old Great Britain international clocked 25 mins 4 secs over the testing, three lap course, finishing 46 seconds behind the winner, team-mate Lauren Howarth, of Leigh Harriers. Smith's next competition is expected to be the Northern CrossCountry Championships at Pontefract on January 28. She was third in the event at Sunderland last year.

Mandale Harrier Sam Day, 14, produced two personal-best performances in the North of England Indoor Championships at Sheffield to win the under-15 high jump (1.65m) and finish second in the long jump (5.35m).
