CHESTER-LE-STREET'S Freya Murray booked herself a place in the Great Britain World Cross Country Championships team when she added the Inter Counties crown to her Scottish and South African titles as the North-East won the women’s team title at Cofton Park, Birmingham.
Murray, wearing the colours of fourth-placed Scotland East, beat the defending champion, three-times European Junior gold-medallist Stephanie Twell, by nine seconds, while former Wallsend Harrier Sonia Samuels led the North-East to victory in an excellent seventh place.
The other members of the team were North-East champion Rosie Smith (18th), Melissa Turner (25th), Georgina Rutherford (33rd) Tracy Laws (35th) and Jane Mooney (36th). The depleted North- East men’s team, winners in 2008, finished seventh.
The North-East’s under-13 girls were runners-up to Essex, with Lydia Turner first home in 13th place.
